After the Ottoman invasion, Tryavna was a distinct settlement, whose inhabitants were prized to guard the pass through the Balkan Mountains to Edirne and Istanbul. Tryavna, whose name originates from the hardy grass species which is prolific in this area, reached prosperity by the end of the 17th Century when the wood carvers and craftsmen, artists and master builders established themselves as some of the most talented in the region. The influence of the members of the Tryavna Art School can be seen everywhere. Master builders constructed stunningly beautiful houses, schools and churches. Artists with Icon-painting ability ornamented the churches with icons and mural paintings and wood workers contributed by designing and carving magnificent ceilings, altars and windows. Felix Kanits, the traveling journalist and commentator of the time visited Tryavna in 1872 and called it the "Bulgarian Nuremberg". A lot of Tryavna townsfolk took part in the struggles and uprisings for an independent Bulgarian church and national awareness and liberation. Tryavna is the birthplace of Vasil Levski's compatriot, Angel Kunchev and Petko R. Slaveikov lived there too and his prominent son, Pencho R Slaveikov was born in Tryavna well noted for his poetry and writings. The exceptionally healthy climate and air along with the dramatic and beautiful countryside, allowed Tryavna to become a leading resort as early as the late 19th century and now many hotels and guest houses can be found here today!

What to do in Tryavna?

The unique old world environment of Tryavna is primarily due to its renaissance architecture. Generations of master-builders constructed churches, bridges, schools and the distinctive Tryavna house. The Renaissance architectural assemblages of Petko Slaveykov and Assenevtsi in the Kachunska Mahala area of Tryavna have preserved their romantic authenticity. Two-storey houses with bow-windows facing the street and wide eaves attract admirers of Bulgarian revival architecture from all over Europe and further afield. Among the masterpieces of Tryavna's architectural heritage are buildings built by Dimitar Sergyuv and the best way to see them is by walking around the town. In particular look for the Kalinchev house 1830, the Dobrev 1834, the Raykov 1846 and the Kirev house 1851, are amongst the most celebrated architectural results of such artistic imagination of the famous builder.

Also check out the vaulted stone bridge designed and built by Dimitar Sergyuv in 1844-45 which links harmoniously the two areas of "old" Tryavna on either side of the babbling river. In 1814 the Tryavna clock tower was built and the local legend says in order to receive permission from the Otoman regime to build the tower, Tryavna women stopped wearing their traditional head dress, "sokai", which resembled a royal crown. All in all there are over 140 monuments and buildings of revival architecture in Tryavna old town and it has been declared an architectural reserve. The best examples being in Dyado Nikola Square, Slaveikov Street, Petar Bogdanov Street, Kachunska Mahala quarter. Must sees are; the Daskalov's House 1804 27A, Slaveikov Street in which the Museum of Woodcarving and Icon-Painting is located. The two uniquely beautiful oak-carved ceilings by Dimiter Oshanina and Ivan Bochukovetsa in 1808 which they carved after a bet made between them as to who could create the most technically intricate ceiling! The Tryavna School of Icon-Painting Museum at 1, Breza Street, contains in excess of 160 icons. The Angel Kunchev Museum-House is the home of one of the celebrated Bulgarian resistance fighters against the occupying Turkish forces. The St. Archangel Mihail Church dates back to 1819 with its magnificent ornately carved iconostasis which is a wooden partition with doors and multiple lines of icons separating the "bema" from the "nave" in Orthodox churches being the work of Vitan Koyuv-Junior. Also while there check the amazingly stunning bishop's throne made by Priest Koyu Vitanov in 1821. The church all has an original cross of palisander wood carved with 12 scenes from the Bible on it.

Every other year on the 26th and 27th May are held Slaveikov's Day events which include a collection of cultural events encompassing diverse festivities and celebrations, poetry and literary readings culminating in the award of the Slaveikov Prize.
