The town of Lyaskovets is located in North-Central Bulgaria and is the municipality town for Lyaskovets Municipality.
The town is situated at the start of the Elena Balkan, just to the east of the Arbanasi ridge and under the cliff upon which the monastery St. St. Petar and Pavel is proudly perched.
The name
Lyaskovets comes from the word leska (`hazel`) or leshnik (`hazelnut`), because the tree was abundant in the area and can still be found in copses. The region has been inhabited like most settlements in the area for over 4,000 years, but grew as an important Bulgarian settlement during the Second Bulgarian Empire, because of its close proximity to the ancient capital Veliko Turnovo and Tsaravets fortress.
Lyaskovets is famous for its beautiful churches, monastery and locally produced wines.
Many legends, documents and archeological findings have been unearthed in the vicinity of the town, amongst which is a recently found Roman winepress which proves that the art of winemaking is one of the oldest crafts practiced by
Lyaskovets citizens. Back in 1863 they founded a society “Bee” and in the middle of 20th century, fascinated by the magic of champagne, cava and prosecco, their followers were the first in Bulgaria who started the production of natural sparkling wines.
The most famous Bulgarian sparkling wine “Iskra” is produced in
Lyaskovets Winery. Other white wine brands: Aligote (dry white wine with specific flavour), Nordkrone (white wine featuring delicate bouquet), dry Chardonnay. Red wines are presented by variations of the Cabernets: dry Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon

Specific wines worth a tasting! Lyaskovets, Brut Natural sparkling dry white wine. This Natural Sparkling Wine is created from exceptional grapes:- Chardonnay, Aligote and Dimyat using an original French recipe with addition of selected yeasts. It has a light fruit aroma with a distinctive tongue tickling flavour. The prolonged dance of the golden bubbles distinguishes this natural sparkling wine from any other carbonated wines.

Lyaskovets 1934" is situated in the north Bulgarian vine growing region Dunavska ravnina (the Danube Plain) which includes a hilly and a semi-mountainous parts. The vineyards in the region are planted mostly on a sandy-clay grey forest soil at an altitude of 192 to 256 m above sea level. The cumulative temperature during tyhe growth period is around 3,800 degsrees Celcius. The mean annual rainfall is around 600mm (350mm during the growth period). These natural and climatic conditions, which are at the same latitude as Tuscany, Provence, Bordeaux and Georgia, are particularly suitable for viniculture development in the region, especially white wines. The winery is able to process 40,000 tons of grapes including reputable varieties of Chardonnay, Aligote, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pamid, Dimyat, Traminer and many others. The outcome are wines with a controlled name for the location and production of high alcoholic drinks, otherwise known as rakia (rakiya) being very well developed.
The centuries-old traditions combined with science and classics have earned "Winery
Lyaskovets 1934" international fame as well as over 130 gold and silver medals and a Certificate of World Quality in Madrid, 1997. The wines are well accepted in Germany, UK, Belgium, Japan, Denmark, USA, and Eastern Europe.
It is no surprise that this area is particularly popular to live in by commuters to Veliko Tarnovo and Gorna Oryahovitsa and this does keep property demand (and prices) at a higher than normal rate.
