Every year we see the storks revisit their nests around the municipality of VT, but do we ever really know where they have been and the distance they travel? Well now experts of “Green balkans” have placed transmitters and rings on 2 young storks born this year in Polikraishte. There first few tentative flights tracked them to neighbouring roofs and electricity pylons, but since have flown to Varbitsa, 20km east of their nest. After this first tandem voyage they have split up opted for completely different routes. One has headed north, 95km near Rousse and the other south across the Balkan mountains near the town Yambol.
The transmitters will allow the opportunity to follow the path of young storks, witnessing their dangerous and long journey south, and with even greater hopes of their return. The name of the study is called “White Stork and is funded by the European Business Congress to promote conservation. This project is being implemented simultaneously in also Russia, Armenia, The Czech Rebulic and Slovenia.
