Samovodskata charshia celebrates Enyovden

download (3)Enyovden (Enyo’s day) is a festival related to the summer solstice. It takes place on 24th June and coincides with St. John Baptist’s Day. It is both a religious feast and a traditional folk ritual. On Midsummer Day the sun is believed to end its journey towards summer and, after rotating three times it turns towards winter. In ancient times there was the popular belief that herbs gathered before sunrise on Enyovden have stronger healing powers than those gathered on any other day of the year, so medicine women went to the meadows and in the woods early in the morning to pick herbs. According to the tradition, on Enyovden children and adults ’bath’ in the dew in order to be strong and healthy. Young women twine a wreath of flowers and herbs and everybody passes through it three times as a ritual for health and fertility. Continue Reading

First Park Festival in Veliko Tarnovo

Boruna Park

Veliko Tarnovo is a very beautiful town that has always enchanted foreigners with its tiered architecture. In October 1907 the popular National Geographic magazine published the travel notes of the American traveller Felix J. Cox entitled Tarnovo – the town of the hanging gardens; the author was smitten with the splendour of the town. Many professional gardeners have worked in the old capital of Bulgaria at the beginning of last century; they’ve created one of the most exquisite and distinguished parks in the country.

In order to revive this tradition and put it in a modern day perspective Veliko Tarnovo Municipality is organizing the First Park Festival in the town. It will be held on June, 21st from 11 am at Boruna Park, near Asenevtsi Monument. Continue Reading

Aerial tramway in Veliko Tarnovo?

tramArchitecture students from Sofia have made a suggestion for the Veliko Tarnovo Municipality to install an aerial tramway over Yantra River. They believe that the town is very suitable for a cable car due to its unique natural setting. It will be used for a means of public transportation but also as a tourist attraction. The aerial lift will span over Yantra River and will connect the Old Town with a point across the river, near the Stambolov Bridge. Spectacular views of Asenevtsi Monument, Sveta Gora Hill and the tiered houses on the opposite bank of the river will be revealed from the air. The students also envisage bright lights to illuminate the river banks and the transformation of old street phones into electronic tourist guides. We are yet to see if these projects are to be realized.
