There is a unique blend of ceramics and photography happening in the unspoilt village of Hotnitsa at a gate called ‘Odyssey’, in the beautiful Bulgarian countryside. A perfect holiday destination for rest, relaxation and immersing yourself in village life which has hardly changed for centuries. The village boasts the famous Hotnitsa waterfalls and Eco Trail, yet is only 15km from the historic old capital of Veliko Tărnovo in the foothills of the Stara Planina Mountains.
Things to do
A cracking ride for the HOTNITSA VELOS who cycled in stunning weather last Sunday July 5th through fields of sunflowers, empty roads (except for the odd mule cart or goat herder). They even found some gnarly off roading along side the River Yantra – not for the faint hearted.
Love exploring your local areas on a bike and feeling connected to the landscape, then join the VELOS on their weekly jaunt – everyone is welcome. They like to create a bit of a stir in the villages, especially when stopping for midway caffeine fixes.
Their next big ride is in the Stara Planina foothills later in the summer and details will be posted on their FB page HOTNITSA VELOS. A keen cyclist or just a novice get in touch and explore Veliko Tarnovo under your own steam – literally.
ABBA’s timeless hits will take over the towns of Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse and Lovech. The ABBA Tribute Concert in Veliko Tarnovo will be held on July 5th from 8 pm, the venue being Veliko Tarnovo Summer Theatre at Marno Pole Park. Famous Bulgarian singers and bands in collaboration with Ruse Philharmonic Orchestra are going to perform the greatest tracks of ABBA, one of the all-time super groups in music history.
Tickets cost less than 5 euro and can be purchased online at eventim.bg
July Morning is a hippie-influenced fest that started in 1972. The name of the event is closely related to Uriah Heep’s hit July Morning which was widely popular in Bulgaria at the time. It’s a unique fest that exists only in this country. Groups of people gather on the eve of July, 1st, usually at the beach, and stay up all night to meet the first Sun rays on the first day of July. They start fires, share drinks and play music while they wait for the sunrise. Although there are a number of versions at to what this tradition signifies, most people consider July Morning a celebration of the new beginning and the freedom of the spirit. It is considered that that the fest started as a subtle act of protest against the communist regime.
Veliko Tarnovo Municipality has plans to build a new park with family-friendly activity grounds spanning on 18,000 sqm. The terrain is located in the Kachitsa area and its ownership was transferred to the Municipality just days ago at a meeting of the Council of Ministers. The place is known as the Circus Arena – circuses visiting the town are setting up their tents there. The Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo personally engaged himself with the project and the final decision was also due to his efforts. In his words, speculations that residential buildings or a new retail chain will be constructed there are false and in reality a new park with many options for recreation will be built on the premises. An interesting fact is that the first evidence of life in the region, from around 4000 BC., was found in Kachitsa area.
