Pork Lard and Mulled Rakia Fest in Apriltsi

Greyana rakia is often served in such traditional pottery cups.

The 7th Pork Lard and Mulled Rakia fest is to take place on February, 18th (Saturday) in the tourist town of Apriltsi. The typical for the region grilled pork lard* and mulled rakia* are going to be presented at the fest. A number of other culinary masterpieces will also be available to try. Organizers have prepared many contests and surprises for visitors and participators. The good mood is to be guaranteed by traditional folk singers and dance troupes.

Slanina is often consumed with homemade bread and raw onion.

*Pork lard – slanina in Bulgarian. These are thick slabs of pure fat which are either smoked or salted/seasoned or both. Then you leave them to hang somewhere dry for a long time and this is what slanina is)

*Mulled rakia – greyana rakia in Bulgarian. It is heated and sweetened with honey or sugar, sometimes with added spices. Heated in kettles, it is often offered to visitors to various open-air festivities, especially in winter.)

Hemus Highway – one step closer to coming true

The project for the construction of Hemus Highway lot passing by Veliko Tarnovo was yesterday submitted for assessment and coordination in the Municipality by the design company that prepared it. Officially Hemus Motorway will run north of Polikraishte, about 13-14 km from the old capital. There will also be a large road junction where Hemus intersects the planned expressway between Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo. The Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo Expressway is to cross the current Sofia – Varna main arterial road near the village of Momin Sbor.

Also yesterday the government in resignation of Boyko Borisov decided to advance the allocation of nearly 23 million leva for the continued construction of Hemus Highway. It was once again stated that the completion of motorway is one of the main priorities of the Cabinet and is a key factor for the development of Northern Bulgaria.

The most beautiful block of flats in Veliko Tarnovo yet?

A block of flats distinctly different and boasting fresh architecture compared to the dull buildings style from the socialist era is soon to be erected in Veliko Tarnovo. The new building will be in sharp contrast with the “sterile environment” in the area imposed by the uniform development of the past and the prevailing grey facades. The residential building is going to be the most beautiful newly build edifice in the town one done. Hopes are high that with the completion of the building a new trend will set in – such of a modern architecture that impresses residents and visitors. The complex is located at the bottom of Marno Pole Park, near the Summer Theatre. The block of flats is also expected to make it to the Building of the Year Contest as it has been 2 years since the town last had a participant in it. Experts say that this type of construction should be imposed in the central part of the city where houses and blocks and not listed building and owners do not have to comply with the old-times authentic style and ask authorities for permission as for altering or demolishing such buildings. The future complex will be quite functional and landscaped; it will also have its own parking.

New rules for public and national holidays in Bulgaria

Yesterday the Bulgarian government approved changes in the Labour Law concerning public and national holidays. Until now if a holiday fell on Tuesday or Thursday the government would usually declare the Monday before or the Friday after an official non-working day (a working Saturday would be then designated to make up for the missed day) meaning we would get 4 workfree days in a row. Or even 6 days in a row! As was the case in May 2014 when 1st May was Thursday and 6st May was Tuesday, both being official holidays in Bulgaria, this meant we got to rest from Thursday till Tuesday! Many people including the business sector disapproved of this practice for various reasons – disruption in the work process, delays in payments, disrupted communication between institutions, less efficient workers, worse labour productivity, stress and so on. This practice of rearranging working days is now a thing of the past. Public and national holidays will no longer be connected with the weekend to form the so called Bridge Holiday – when they fall during working days only the particular day will be non-working. When they happen to be during weekends the following Monday is to compensate and will be a day off work. The changes come in effect from 1st January 2017 meaning 2nd January (Monday) is officially the first non-working day under the new law.
