Otello is considered to be the peak of all of Verdi’s musical compositions. He had a genuine affection for Shakespeare’s work and wanted to compose a magnificent musical piece based on his play Othello. Otello was Verdi’s penultimate opera, and was first performed at La Scala opera house in Milan on February 5, 1887. Shakespeare’s play Othello had all the ingredients of a music drama – malevolent evil, sexual jealousy, murder and suicide, so Verdi had an excellent foundation for his opera.
