Abandoned motel by Veliko Tarnovo to be transformed into a spa gem

The unsightly Opalchenska street

A real spa gem near Veliko Tarnovo is currently under construction it was announced by the Chief Architecture of Veliko Tarnovo Municipality. The building which operated as a motel in the past is located at the end of Opalchenska street (the one starting from Yantra Hotel towards the village of Samovodene). The process of reconstruction is in the final stages and soon will be completed. The edifice was previously used also a kids vacation camp. It took almost a year for the new owners of the place to coordinate their project with the requirements of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works.

The motel is totally transformed. The whole complex spans at 2,500 sqm and comprises of a bar, a restaurant seating more than 100 people, a hotel with 30 rooms, a spa centre and a swimming centre. The local authorities are contributing towards the project due to their aim to develop this part of the down and make it more appealing as currently it is in a pretty bad state. The street is also to be repaired soon.

Mindya Rock Fest 2014 is coming soon

rockfestThe village of Mindya annually holds a rock fest. The event is organized by the notable political commentator Evgeni Daynov who owns a house in the village. He came up with the idea in 2009. 16 bands will perform in this year’s edition of the rock fest. Mindya Rock Fest 2014 will be a three-day event taking place at the end of August  – 28th, 29th and 30th.

The rock fest will welcome foreign performers for the first time this year, namely guest groups from Turkey and Serbia. The audience at the concerts will hear some nice blues and rock music. For a second year in a row Mindya Rock Fest will present rising bands which are to compete for the prize to record a song for free in a professional studio. The music event is a part of Veliko Tarnovo Municipality official cultural programme from 2012. Continue Reading

Violin-player virtuoso Vasko Vassilev to perform in Veliko Tarnovo

One of the most famous violinists in the world Vasko Vassilev will stage a concert at Veliko Tarnovo Summer Theatre on 30th August. The show is part of the brilliant musician’s national tour which will make stops in six Bulgarian towns. The Concert Master of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House has opted to play only film scores in his Cinema Concertos.

The violin player will be accompanied on the stage by the two-time Ice Dance World Champion Albena Denkova. She will dance to the music of Libertango as Vasko Vassilev plays the composition of Ástor Piazzolla. Recently she won the Bulgarian edition of Dancing with the Stars and will treat the public to a dance show to be remembered.

The show kicks off on August, 30th at 8 pm. Tickets cost 20 to 50 lv and can be bought on line.

Nikyup – an ancient Roman town with a strong liking for watermelons

The people of the village boast not only with the remnants of the ancient Roman town of Nicopolis ad Istrum but also with the mass production of tasty watermelons

melonA village with ancient history is striving to turn the Bulgarian watermelon into a national symbol. The village of Nikyup, in Veliko Tarnovo district, is proud not only that the ancient town of Nicopolis ad Istrum once stood in the same location as the nowadays village but also with the mass production of the sweet fruit. Each summer the village hosts the Watermelon fete which attracts thousands of people. The mayor of Nikyup came up with the idea of a village organization based on the love towards the tasty summer treat. Nikyup and three more villages will make a union which will organize tours in all the Bulgarian settlements which have similar watermelon celebrations.fest2

The numerous foreign tourists who come to see Nicopolis ad Istrum each year will also find out why the locals take such a pride in watermelons when they taste the sweetest watermelons they have ever tried. The ancient Roman town itself is one of the most preserved in Eastern Europe and is just 2 km away from the village. The aim of the Mayor is to develop local rural and village tourism through the historical and cultural heritage of the Nikyup.

New viewing deck in Veliko Tarnovo

10547455_712999348760498_2990555850012195303_nThe realization of one of the most spectacular and attractive projects that has come up out of the 34th European Architecture Students Assembly, which is currently under way in Veliko Tarnovo, was started yesterday. The steel framing of the panoramic platform called Sky walk was mounted yesterday with the help of a crane truck.

The original idea belonging to architecture students participating in the Assembly envisions a viewing deck protruding beyond the line of the building façades on Stefan Stambolov str. This way people standing on it will have a 180° panoramic view.  The Old Town, Boruna Park (where the Asenevtsi Monument is) and Yantra River with its winding meanders will be seen in a new way as never before.10577104_712999288760504_3759435023033869292_n

The platform will be a very tempting place for filming video clips and taking pictures of the magnificent Veliko Tarnovo with its authentic tiered houses and unique terrain layout.
