Jorge Bucay and his son Demián meet book-reading fans in Veliko Tarnovo

Jorge Bucay is a psychotherapist and writer from Argentina. His books have sold more than 2 million copies around the world, and have been translated into more than seventeen languages.

The world’s best-selling author will visit Veliko Tarnovo for the first time. On June, 11th he will present his long anticipated book 20 steps forward (20 Pasos Hacia Adelante) and will meet book-reading fans. He will be accompanied by his son Demián Bucay who’s also a writer.

It will be Demián’s first visit to Bulgaria, while his father has already been here on three occasions – in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Both authors will have a joint premier under the motto Let them tell us during which they will present their new works.

796 high-school seniors will walk a red carpet by Assenevtsi monument

May 24th is the Bulgarian Education and Culture, and Slavic Script Day. It is a widely celebrated public holiday. Besides honouring the deed of the brothers Cyril and Methodius, founders of the Cyrillic Alphabet, students’ graduation balls are also organized on this date. Graduation proms in Bulgaria are traditionally held in May, mainly on the 23rd, 24th or 25th, after finishing exams.

Shopska salata – the Taste of Europe

The Bulgarian Shopska salata has no rivalry in the A Taste of Europe contest, organized by the European Parliament on its Facebook page; the competition features traditional recipes from the EU member countries. Everyone can cast their vote for one of the 28th national dishes. A taste of Europe is part of the efforts of the European Parliament to stimulate high turnout.

So far our traditional salad holds the first place with 14061 votes. The Cold beet soup from Lithuania is second with 2199; Romania’s Sweet cabbage rolls are currently third with 993 likes.

The goal of the European Parliament is to turn the European Elections into a celebration and show that the Old Continent is proud with its cultural diversity. The voting continues till 25th May, the date of the European Elections.

Veliko Tarnovo launches a sightseeing tourist train tour

1378195759Veliko Tarnovo launches a sightseeing tourist train tour. Its starting point will be in front of Yantra Hotel. The tourist train will be running from 10 am till 16 pm. Its route is to pass along Velchova Zavera Square, Tsar Asen I Square (in front of Tsarevets Fortress), The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Kraibrezhna Street (along the Yantra River) and then it will return along the same itinerary. Depending on traffic the journey in both directions will take up to 20-30 minutes.

 The train has two carriages and its capacity is 20 adults or 30 children. It is equipped with a ramp for passengers with disabilities. One-way ticket is 2 leva (the return one being 4 leva), children and pupils go for free.

The tourist train is part of Veliko Tarnovo Municipality project Enhancement of tourism dscn1116attractions and related infrastructure under the Regional Development Operational Programme. Guests and citizens of Veliko Tarnovo can now go sightseeing riding the tourist train and admire some of the town’s historical sites already restored owing to that project.


Veliko Tarnovo will be decorated with hanging flower baskets

flowersHanging flower pots will be arranged along Veliko Tarnovo’s main streets and boulevards. Currently experts from the Municipality department of Ecology and environmental protection are selecting the plant species. The flower baskets will be suspended from the street lighting poles in the beginning of next month. They will be hanging roughly 2-2.5 m above the sidewalks. Around 100 flower pots will be put in place.

Also hedgerows will be planted by a number of residential buildings, situated close to the main roads. The live fencings are pleasing to the eye and will improve the aesthetic appearance of the town. Besides they provide relatively good soundproofing against traffic noise pollution. The idea was introduced in the Municipality by citizens of the Old capital.

Veliko Tarnovo marks an increase of 40% in tourists on a yearly basis

Investments of more than 7 million leva have been made

vt3Nearly one million tourists have visited the cultural and historical sites of Veliko Tarnovo and the region during the last year. That’s an increase of 40 %, it was announced by the mayor of Veliko Tarnovo. The number of bed places available also marks a rise of 200 beds, due to the fact that two new hotels, five guest houses and also another twelve accommodation establishments have been opened during the past year.The total accommodation capacity now amounts to 6000 beds. For the improvement of tourist infrastructure and for the creating of new attraction sites the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo has invested over 7 million leva.

Currently new projects are being elaborated; it is hoped that they will be granted funding during the new program period. Under those projects the Shishman’s bath in Asenov quarter will be restored. There are plans for the Museum of Wax Figures to be expanded by a 1000 sqm. Also a new park will be built in the foot of the Tsarevets Hill – bicycle lanes and pedestrian zone will connect the medieval churches in Asenov quarter with the Holy Forty Martyrs church. An artisan street will be set up on Tsarevets Fortress. There will be also a riverside walking track that will go along the picturesque Yantra River near Boris Denev Art Gallery. New parking lots will be built in the Old Town of Veliko Tarnovo – by the churches of Holy Forty Martyrs and St. Dimitar. Architects will discuss the building projects for area where the now demolished Old Military Academy was placed before. Some of the plans provide for the construction of a multifunctional congress centre, a military museum and also an aquarium. It is yet to be decided what exactly will be build there.

Veliko Tarnovo Municipality hopes to attract even more tourist after accomplishing all those projects.


The Throne from ‘Game of Thrones’ is coming to Veliko Tarnovo

GameofThronesIronThroneThe imposing iron throne from the extremely successful series “Game of Thrones” is arriving in Veliko Tarnovo. Its plot is inspired by ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, a series of fantasy novels written by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. The throne which is built of thousands blades will be situated in the square in front of Tsarevets Fortress. Fans of the TV show and the books will be presented will the opportunity to see the throne and take photos of it. The iconic chair is over 2 meters in height and weights over 100 kgs.

The throne will stay in Veliko Tarnovo for three days – from 6 pm on April, 11th till 1 pm on April, 13th. Everyone is welcome to come and see it; access is free.
