Veliko Tarnovo is located somewhat amphitheatrically on Trapezitsa, Tsaravets, Sveta Gora and Momina Krepost hills and has an abundance of historical buildings including, a medieval fortress, medieval walled fortifications, ancient churches (which have been rebuilt after the ottoman incursion of Bulgaria lasting 500 years, was rebuffed during the liberation period), merchant houses and stores, bridges and ornate public buildings, some of which are now museums.

Veliko Tarnovo has developed from the historical centre around Tsaravets in a Westerly direction and Southerly to the Yantra River and Northerly to the edge of the pine forests on top of the high escarpment. This development incorporates new residential developments, commercial centre, industrial areas and park areas as well as a shopping mall and the large military university to the west. The area known as Sveta Gora has the St Cyril and St Methodius University complex along with residential properties. The “Old Town”, Varusha and Asenov consists of historical renaissance and revival style housing, museums and mixed with more modern hotels, restaurants and shops.

However, one internationally acclaimed spectacle to be seen here in Veliko Tarnovo is the “Sound and Light” audio-visual show which is a unique attraction. The show was created by a team of Bulgarian and Czech engineersand managed by Vulo Radev and Jaromir Hnick, with the opening show taking place in 1985 commemorating the 800th anniversary of the rebellion led by brothers Asen and Petar. The overwhelming music and light creates an unforgettable and emotional atmosphere over Tsaravets Castle, it’s fortifications and hill. The music, which was composed specifically for the show, leads the story which follows the historical events of Tarnovgrad (Veliko Tarnovo) with an eerie clink of chains and bells chiming throughout the 15 minute masterpiece. The opening part takes you back to when Veliko Tarnovo was home to Thracians, Slavs and Bulgars. The theme continues evoking thoughts of the pain and suffering throughout this period until 681 AD when the 1st state of Bulgaria was created after the Bulgars defeated the Byzantine army! This relentless theme continues of peace and continuity of life interrupted by raids and invasion, the tempo goes quicker and unleashes in a salvo at the end to celebrate Bulgarian history, liberation, life and spirituality. In January 2013 a new museum opened in Veliko Tarnovo old town on Nikola Piccolo Street, which allows you to appreciate and experience Veliko Tarnovo town’s “golden years”! It is dedicated to the Second Bulgarian Kingdom including the Asen Dynasty and exhibits 28 natural-height figures made from polyester resin, synthetic wax, silicon, and modeling plaster. The figures and accompanying backdrops were designed by a local Veliko Tarnovo sculptor, Boris Borisov and includes Tsars Ivan Asen II, Kaloyan and his queen, Boyars (noblemen), soldiers from the time, captured crusaders, and patriarchs (members of the orthodox priesthood). A "Medieval Crafts" hall displays different craftsmen such as blacksmiths, stonemasons, bladesmiths, icon painters, coin minters, potters and liturgists along with artifacts discovered during local archaeological excavations in Veliko Tarnovo. The "Medieval Weapons" hall, exhibits the Broadsword, the Greatsword and the Longsword aka the “Bastardsword”, shields, spears, bows, crossbows and arrows along with two models of a battering ram!

Take a walk down Samovodska Charshia which allows you to enjoy folklore celebrations and sit down, take a lunch and cool drink whilst watching the world and people pass by! Afterwards you can buy jewelry, pottery, weavings, copperware and wood carvings to name but a few crafts, available on this historical and lovely street. Afterwards take another stroll downhill to the old cobbled Gurko Street with its museums, revival architecture and some super views across the Yantra gorge to the statue of the Asen Dynasty and the Boris Denev Art Gallery. These two monuments can be reached by walking west along Gurko Street, past the beautiful Gurko Hotel and Tavern turn left and walk past the massive Interhotel Veliko Tarnovo with its very distinct, sombre and some would say out of place architecture! Over the "Stamboloviyat Most" or Stambolov Bridge which is the arched iron bridge and on to the Asen monument where you will get a spectacular view of the old Veliko Tarnovo hanging on to the cliff faces and steep rock faces behind.

Take a walk down the Old High Street (Stefan Stambolov) then Nezavismost ,where the central post office is located on your left hand side opposite Mother Bulgaria Monument and then continue along Vasil Levski street, where the limestone facade of the town hall can be seen on your right hand side and you are now in the modern Centre quarter, where there are banks, shops, cafes and chemists. Continue down Vasil Levski until you reach a fork in the road where should you turn left you go down Nikola Gabrovski Str and right takes you up Bulgaria Boulevard and on to Kartala. At this intersection take a walk around the bazaar to appreciate what fresh fruit and vegetable produce is available within the locality of Veliko Tarnovo.

One thing is for sure that once you are here you will not be in a rush to leave Veliko Tarnovo town or its surroundings.
